The Route

The route of Phil Valentine's Great American Vacation

Phil Valentine's Great American Vacation originates in Fort Pierce, FL. Just south, at Stuart, FL, Yesterday crosses the state of Florida via the Okeechobee Waterway, a 274-mile trek that takes Yesterday across Lake Okeechobee to Fort Myers, FL. From there the vessel turns north up past Tampa and along the Florida Panhandle. At Steinhatchee, FL, the crew will take the boat 75 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to Carrabelle, FL. From Carrabelle it's on to Mobile Bay and up the Tombigbee River. The Tombigbee joins the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway which leads to the Tennessee River.

  2. Phil, when you get into Pickwick, you should hang a right and take a side trip to Nickajack Lake just outside of Chattanooga. You will discover some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere along the loop and its side trips. The area is known as the "Grand Canyon of Tennessee"

  4. Phil,

Congrats on the boat and voyage. Are you planning to just get the boat back to TN, or are you planning to complete the Great Loop?

  7. If you're still delayed and have time, check out the Navy Seal Museum in Ft. Pierce. Great museum about great people. One SEAl by the name of Pete Carolans, a friend of John Wayne, painted the mural there. Bon Voyage. Safe sailing.

    1. Yes, our captain is a former Navy SEAL. We're heading over there before we leave.

    2. Outstanding! Glad you can see that. Ask your Frog Captain if he knows J.J. Fletcher. One great old Frogman, original UDT. Good friend of mine, and of John Wayne's.

  9. Phil there are three family friendly marinas on Kentucky lake if that is the area you are interested in. My favorite is Pebble Isle in New Johnsonville, about 1 1/2 hrs from Nashville.. It has very nice slips and a great restaurant. There is also Cuba Landing right off I 40 at the 137 exit and is easy to get to and only a little over an hour from Nashville. Birdsong Yatchet Club at Birdsong marina also has nice slips and great fishing. Just some suggestions if you are looking this direction we would love to have you and your family in the area. Have a great trip.

  11. Was wondering why the reruns on the show. Hoped you weren't lost at sea. Had to come check your blog.
Would be cool to give y'all a wave when you pass under Hwy 100. That's the closest road over the river in my neck o' the woods.
So what are you gonna hang a right in KY onto the Cumberland and down past the riverfront in Nashville? Would be cool to have a riverfront welcome back event.

And of course check your hull. Those barnacles might be illegal foreign nationals!

  12. Just checked out your site, my 92 year old mom listens to you everyday and is fascinated by your journey. I recently moved her to Franklin, TN from Cape Cod and her vision is very poor so the radio is her best friend and she loves your show! She will be excited to see a picture of you and your boat!
